    Henry Winkler Facts

    1. Henry’s parents were German Jews who used to live in Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany. By 1939, his father had realized that they were no longer safe in the country. He had then arranged to take his wife on a business trip to the United States, smuggling out the family jewels by encasing them in chocolate.
    2. His paternal uncle, Helmut Theodor Winkler, was supposed to leave the country with them. However, he had changed his mind at the last moment and had chosen to leave at a later date. He was eventually taken away by the Nazis. When Henry was born, his parents had named him after both his uncle Helmut and the then-President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
    3. After his high school graduation, he was not allowed to attend the graduation ceremony. This was because he had to repeat the subject of Geometry for the 4th time during summer school. After finally passing the course, he had received his diploma via post.
    4. He was not diagnosed with dyslexia until the age of 31. This realization had come after his stepson Jed was diagnosed with dyslexia.
    5. He is an avid fly fisherman and often fishes in the state of Montana.
    6. One major film role that he regrets turning down is the role of Danny Zuko in the 1978 musical film Grease.
    7. In January 2026, Henry won the Critics Choice Award for “Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” for his work in Barry.
