- In 1943, he was awarded the Academy Award for ‘Best Actor’ for his moving performance as the anti-fascist German engineer Kurt Muller in Watch on the Rhine (1943). Furthermore, he also won the Golden Globe Award for ‘Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama’, thus becoming the first winner of the said award in the show’s inaugural year.
