Steve graduated from Edna High School in 1983, where he excelled at football, baseball, and track events. He got a football scholarship in 1984 to attend Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas and got another scholarship to continue studying at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, to major in Physical Education.
Austin left college when he was just 4 months short of getting his undergraduate degree because he found it difficult to cope with math and accounting classes. Instead, he took up a job to work on a freight dock for Watkins Motor Lines.
He saw a commercial on the television for Chris Adams Wrestling School, where he trained for 5 months that led to his professional wrestling debut in Dallas, Texas, at the world-famous Sportatorium in 1989.
